I am the daughter of this lake.

This collection is the closest I have ever been to myself.

It's not just fashion, it's home, identity, memory, displacement, survival and the feeling of trying not to lose yourself while living far away from where you were formed.

I was born in Kisumu, Kenya, right by the shores of Lake Victoria. That lake raised me. It fed us. Almost every man I knew went out on those boats before sunrise to fish, hoping to bring something home for their families. And every morning, the women would wait on the shore , some relieved when the boats returned heavy with tilapia, others quietly worried when they didn’t.

Living far from home changes you. Sometimes you arrive in a new country and slowly start feeling like a visitor everywhere. A visitor there. A visitor here too. But this collection reminded me that distance does not remove identity. Where you come from stays inside you. But this collection reminded me that distance does not remove identity. Where you come from stays inside you.

The shape of these bags comes from the wooden boats I grew up seeing by the water. Every bag name comes from Dholuo, my mother tongue.

Daughter of the Lake is not just a collection to me. It is home.
